The Letter
It’s a lovely sunny spring day here in London as I write this. Hoping that’s going to set the tone for the next few months. We have an outing planned tonight to see the legendary Ray Keith perform classic drum and bass with an orchestra of all things. Known for his label Dread Records, and more pioneering Jungle/Drum and Bass productions than we care to mention, we’re hoping he’ll deliver tonight!
Now, on to this month’s vinyl:
Our LP for this month is a classic unvault for you: You may recognise the name John Turrell as one half of Smoove and Turrell, who we have showcased on W&S in the past. This is Turrell’s classic debut solo album “The Kingmaker,” which was created with writing partner and producer Nick Faber as a reflection and meditation on the ebb and flow of a normal man’s life, authenticity and relatability are two key characteristics of the writing style on this record. While it is an album that references a diverse set of influences there is an unmistakable soul and blues sensibility that courses throughout the tracks.
Our EP this month is a limited one we’re very happy to have got our hands on. We didn’t get much information on the artist; Mother of Pearls from lex, the owner of the excellently titled Gunfinger Food label that this release is in, but a listen of the old school breakbeat-filled & acid house tinged EP convinced us to grab it for you immediately! Play this one loud.
